Implemented digital accessibility in MTS's global design system: planned, tracked progress, and conducted development reviews. MTS — Top 3 ecosystems in Russia, with 82 million users engaging with its products every month.

Digital accessibility is an MTS initiative aimed at creating accessible products for people with visual, hearing, motor impairments, etc. According to Rosstat, various forms of disabilities affect 8% of Russia's population, representing a significant portion of the product audience.

Accessibility is important not only for people with permanent disabilities but also in cases of temporary limitations, such as a broken arm, loud noise, laryngitis, etc.

Results

  • Improved key metrics: increased the number of accessibility-adapted components, accelerated their implementation, expanded the number of products using them, reduced verification time, and engaged more designers and developers in accessibility work.
  • Defined how 80+ components would be read aloud by screen readers for visually impaired users.
  • Refactored color tokens in the design system to ensure new colors and components comply with WCAG 2 standards.
  • Designed the behavior of 80+ components to correctly adjust their size based on user text settings on mobile devices.
  • Defined the touch area for 80+ components, setting a minimum size of 40×40 px for better usability.
  • Wrote 6 articles on digital accessibility for MTS's internal portal and created 80+ accessibility specifications for design system components.
  • Conducted an audit of 5 MTS products for compliance with digital accessibility standards and provided recommendations for improvement.
